For my final event I went to Ivana Dama’s presentation/event titled “Silent Vibrations & Siren Echoes” on April 17th at 3pm. Originally the event was scheduled to be over zoom, but it was changed to in–person. Nonetheless the presentation and information that Ivana gave was so interesting. As for the event, Ivana started off by explaining her education, life, and experiences with “sound.” She broke down the different types of sounds and vibrations that we do not always consider, and provided ways in which these sounds can be used through experimental projects.

Ivana described Molecular and Cellular Vibrations, or sounds we don’t/can’t hear, Brain Waves and Space, Human and Animal Voice, and Environment/Weather. She displayed some of the projects she has done such as facial emotions translated onto another person, an eye tracking device that plays music without the need of the artist to physically touch the instruments which ShoutoutLA highlights in their article on Ivana’s person experience with the “Command and Control” project, and overcoming the comments individuals said about her being an “artist.” Tessa Solomon, in her article, also describes the value of sound and art. Particularly how it does not necessarily have to relate to music but rather all forms of sound can be considered art, even silence itself.

She also showed many different works of art such as “Home 1999,” which were satellite images captured above the clouds in Belgrade, Serbia after the NATO bombing the same year. However, the project that really solidified my understanding of vibrations and sounds was Ivana’s creation of a large rotating disk, similar to a record player, where she took the idea from siren disks that make noise as a result of vibrations from air. In her project, Ivana along with a colleague of hers, used air pressure devices to blow air into a large rotating disc, and the result was different sound and waves each different from the other person. Her projects like “I don’t know if you can hear us but we are being very loud,” also help confront issues we face today such as the silencing of women’s voices. I love how Ivana is able to use her projects to teach through emotions, visuals, and auditory.
